The villages surrounding Ponnamaravathy are some of the most fertile in Pudukkottai district. Rice, sugarcane, groundnut and cereals thrive on the black-soil plains, fed by the ancient tank irrigation system and seasonal monsoon rains.
Ponnamaravathy has a strong educational ecosystem: a Government Higher Secondary School, Girls High School, Chidabaram Matric School, Lions Matric Higher Secondary School, Valampuri Vaduganathan HSS, Amala Annai Matric HSS, and SSR Polytechnic College at Thenimalai.
Ponnamaravathy sits on the state highway connecting it to Pudukkottai (37 km east), Madurai (~72 km west), Karaikudi (~45 km south) and Trichy (~95 km north). Regular bus services connect the town to all major cities in Tamil Nadu.
The memorial hero stone at the centre of town marking where King Ponnamaran died. The Nadukal tradition is one of the oldest in Tamil culture — these stones were erected to honour warriors who died in battle, and this particular stone is the literal founding monument of the town.
Ponnamaravathy has a Government Hospital serving the town and surrounding taluk villages. Primary health centres across the taluk provide healthcare at the village level, supported by the town's facilities.
